Tommy On Broadway
Townshend had adapted his Iron Man album for the stage in the late 1980s, and decided to work with director Des McAnuff on a new stage version of Tommy. The show debuted in July 1992 at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego. It moved to Broadway the following year, where it premiered at the St James Theatre on 22 April. The show was a box-office smash, picking up many awards, and ran for over two years. In the same year, Townshend made his first solo tour of the US in support of his Psychoderelict album.
