Personalities | Kaija Saariaho | Modern Era | Opera
b. 1952, Finnish
Having studied in Helsinki, Freiburg and Paris, composer Saariaho focused on writing chamber works in the early part of her career, often integrating live music with electronics. In recent years, her works have increased in stature, structure and orchestral forces. Saariaho has produced three operas with her librettist, Amin Maalouf: L’amour de loin (2000), Adriana Mater (2006, commissioned by the Opéra National de Paris), and Émilie, based on the life story of Émilie du Châtelet, the French mathematician, physicist and writer during the Age of Enlightenment.
