Russian violist
Bashmet studied at the Moscow Conservatory, and won the International Viola Competition, Munich, in 1976. He has given the first performance of viola concertos by Schnittke (Amsterdam, 1986) and Gubaydulina (Chicago, 1997) and of Britten’s Double Concerto for violin and viola with Gidon Kremer (Manchester, 1998).
