(Zo-fya Goo’-ba-du’-lena) b. 1931
Russian composer
Gubaydulina’s innovative works have grown from her belief in the spiritual power of music. She creates a mesmerizing sound-world that explores many different structures and sonorities, often using traditional instruments. One of her best-known works is the violin concerto Offertorium (1980), which elaborates the king’s theme from J. S. Bach’s Musical Offering. Garten von Freuden und Traurigkeiten (‘Garden of Joys and Sorrows’, 1980) for flute, viola and harp is a chamber work of haunting beauty, while the choral and orchestral Jetzt immer Schnee (‘Now Always Snow’, 1993) creates an atmosphere of intense mysticism.
