(Vocal/instrumental group, 1988–present)

Nine Inch Nails – Trent Reznor (vocals), Aaron North (guitar), Jeordie White (bass), Alessandro Cortini (keyboards) and Josh Freese (drums) – are the latest line-up of Reznor’s ever-popular band. Somehow walking the thin line between electro and metal, mainstream yet eternally credible, they are one of America’s least deified rock bands, but a five-album, double Grammy-winning career shows they are not totally forgotten. Rap superstar Eminem, on debut single ‘My Name Is’, opted for a closeted reference to the band in the lyrics.

Largely a showcase for Reznor’s prodigious multi-instrumental talent, NIN (as it is often abbreviated) found their music reaching the most unexpected of ears when a certain Johnny Cash recorded their ‘Hurt’ epic in 2004 on the fourth of his hugely appreciated American Recordings albums. The death of the country giant less than a year later, and the emotionally draining video, brought legions of new appreciators of Reznor’s work.
