French soprano
Dessay’s performance as Olympia (Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann) at the Opéra Bastille (subsequently repeated at the Vienna State Opera, La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera) established her reputation as the world’s leading French coloratura soprano. She made frequent appearances as Queen of the Night (The Magic Flute) and as Donizetti’s Lucia, Delibes’ Lakmé, and Amina (Bellini’s La sonnambula), all roles that she recorded. She announced her retirement from opera in 2013.
