Personalities | Hans Hotter | Modern Era | Opera
1909–2003, German
Although he sang Mozart and Strauss, Hotter is best remembered for his definitive interpretations of Wagner. His powerful bass-baritone premiered as the Speaker in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, and he returned to this and other small roles well into his eighties. Hotter made his debut in Munich singing Wotan in 1937, and this role, along with Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger, led to a 12-year association with the Bayreuth Festival.
