(Vocals, b. 1981)

Beyoncé Knowles – the surname is rarely used – left Grammy award-winning girl band Destiny’s Child in 2003 to pursue the most successful career of any female in the 2000s. Her first solo album, that year’s Dangerously In Love, went straight in at No. 1 in both the US and UK. Her follow up, B’Day, came three years later in 2006, again topping the Billboard 200 and reaching No. 3 in the UK. She made it a hat trick of US chart-topping albums in 2008 with I Am… Sasha Fierce, named after her self-proclaimed alter ego that appears when she performs.

She combined her music career, which included five solo US No. 1 singles in the decade, with roles in movies including Dreamgirls and The Pink Panther (both 2006). She married rap star Jay-Z in 2008 to create black music’s golden couple, while sister Solange is next up on father Mathew’s conveyor belt of talent. According to record company Sony, her record sales, combined with those of Destiny’s Child, have surpassed 100 million.
