Personalities | Adele | Comeback Queen

‘There are a lot of people who probably think that I’m never going to sing again, so I will come for them and kick their arses!’ Adele joked with a reporter on the red carpet pre-Grammys. Her phenomenal success that night wasn’t restricted to winning six awards though: Adele’s knockout performance confirmed her famous voice had been unaffected by throat surgery.

‘I have absolutely no intention of going into acting or making perfumes: I am a singer. I will stick to what I am good at, and not spread myself thin and become mediocre at everything I do.’

She has since spoken about the time following the operation in a positive light. ‘I think I just needed to be silenced. And when you are silent, everyone else around you is silent,’ she told Vogue. The singer admitted life before her voice troubles was extremely fast-paced and exhausting but that following the surgery, the noise in her life, ‘just stopped’. ‘It was like I was floating in the sea for three weeks. It was brilliant. It was my body telling me to fix me. I had so much time to kind of go over things and get over things, which is amazing. I think if I hadn’t had my voice trouble, I would never have broached those subjects with myself,’ she revealed. Adele admitted that as of 2012 she finally felt ‘at peace’ with herself, having taken the time to reflect on her achievements and to allow herself to feel proud – ‘I’ve never fully appreciated the things that I’ve achieved until now.’

Her career may have been hanging in the balance, yet in October 2011 Adele’s love life was suddenly transformed when she met new love Simon Konecki. The former Etonian and City banker founded water distribution charity, Drop4Drop and is 14 years Adele’s senior. According to The Daily Mail the pair were introduced by mutual friends at a fundraising event, where Adele expressed interest in Konecki’s work. Adele has said Konecki’s support was vital to her recovery and comeback. ‘He’s wonderful!’ she gushed. ‘And he’s proud of me, but he doesn’t care about what I do or what other people think. He looks after me.’

In January 2012, it was widely reported that Konecki was in fact a married man. The reports were however quickly quashed by the singer in a statement – which she claimed would be ‘the first and last time’ any details of the relationship would be discussed. ‘Contrary to the reports and headlines … Simon is divorced and has been for four years.’

Home Sweet Home

Around the time of the 2012 Grammys it was reported Adele had upgraded her two-bedroom Notting Hill flat to rent a Grade II-listed countryside mansion in West Sussex, not far from her lover’s Brighton base. With 10 bedrooms, two swimming pools, a helicopter pad and 25 acres, the singer’s manor came with a rental bill...
